Use this guide to clear an F02 or F2 error code on a Maytag front-load washer. This code points to a drain problem, often caused by coins, toothpicks, bread ties, socks, lint, or other debris clogging the drain-pump filter trap. This guide was written around a Maytag Epic front-load washer, but similar Maytag front-load models may have minor differences.
🧰 Tools
- Flashlight
- T20 Torx Screwdriver Bit
- 6-in-1 Screwdriver
ШагиSteps
1
Identify the drain problem
- Check the display for an F02 or F2 code when the load is still wet after a cycle.
- Open the door and inspect the small drain holes inside the rubber door gasket.
2
Prepare the washer
- Lay towels on the floor under the lower front panel to catch water from the drain-pump area.
- Keep a flashlight nearby so you can see the pump filter trap clearly.
3
Remove the lower access panel
- Use a T20 Torx bit to remove the three screws along the bottom edge of the lower access panel.
- Pull out the dispenser drawer if it blocks the panel.
- Lift the access panel, drop it slightly, and pull it away from the washer.
4
Locate the filter trap
- Use a flashlight to find the round filter trap at the front of the pump assembly.
- Look for the troubleshooting packet mounted on the side of the washer.
5
Move the wire retainer
- Squeeze the tabs on the wire retainer and pull it out slightly if it blocks the filter cap.
- Move the retainer out of the way so the filter cap can turn.
- Tap the filter cap gently if it feels stuck and will not start turning.
6
Drain the remaining water
- Turn the filter cap counterclockwise until it loosens.
- Hold a towel under the filter trap while you remove the cap.
7
Clean the filter trap
- Pull the filter trap out of the pump opening.
- Remove debris from the trap, such as coins, toothpicks, bread ties, socks, or lint.
- Use a rag and a screwdriver to wipe out the pump cavity.
- Clean the filter trap until the drain holes are clear.
8
Reinstall the filter trap
- Align the notch on the filter trap with the matching notch in the pump opening.
- Slide the filter trap into the pump opening.
- Turn the cap clockwise like a jar lid until it feels snug.
- Reinstall the wire retainer if you removed it earlier.
9
Test the repair
- Plug in the washer and run a cycle with or without clothes.
- Watch the filter-trap area for leaks while the washer drains.
- Confirm that the washer pumps water out at a steady pace and the F02 or F2 code does not return.
10
Reinstall the access panel
- Pull out the dispenser drawer for clearance if needed.
- Tilt the lower access panel into place and lift it onto the washer.
- Reinstall the three lower screws with a T20 Torx bit.
- Push the dispenser drawer back in.
11
Dry the work area
- Use towels to dry any water that ran onto the floor or into the drawer area.
- Check around the filter cap again after the test cycle for any slow drips.
If the washer still shows an F02 or F2 code after the filter trap is clean, use the onboard troubleshooting packet to continue checking the drain system. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
