The F06 error on some Hotpoint, Indesit, and Whirlpool washing machines means the door is stuck locked and won't open. The door lock, also called the door interlock, latch, or locking mechanism, keeps the door closed during a cycle and should release when the washer is safe to open. Use this guide to try the reset, emergency green pull cord, card, cord, and last-resort pry methods. If the handle, lever, interlock, or wiring has failed—especially after a burning or sulfur smell—leave the machine unplugged and arrange a separate replacement repair or professional diagnosis.

Identify the F06 door fault

Treat the F06 code as a door stuck or door locked fault on these machines.
These instructions were written with a Hotpoint Aquarius washing machine, but similar Hotpoint, Indesit, and Whirlpool models may differ slightly.
Turn the washer off at the wall socket or unplug it before reaching under the machine or near the door lock.
Wait for the drum to stop and any hot water to cool before trying to release the door.
Leave the washer unplugged and don't keep using it if you smell burning, sulfur, or hot electrical parts.
Drain the washer safely before releasing the door if water is visible in the drum.

Try a power reset

Switch the washer off at the actual plug socket, not only at the control panel.
Leave the washer powered off for five minutes.
Try opening the door while the washer is still powered off.
Stop using the washer and continue diagnosing if the F06 code returns or the door locks again.

Remove the lower service panel

Use the end of a spoon or a flat blade screwdriver to pop off the lower front panel.
Locate the green pull cord on the right-hand side, near the filter.
Keep the washer unplugged while the lower panel is removed.

Use the green emergency release cord

Pull the green cord down to release the door lock.
Listen for the door release as the cord moves.
Grip the cord firmly and move it up and down if the lock is stuck fast.
Pull the green cord down with one hand while trying the door handle with the other hand.
Use pliers to grip the green cord if you can't get enough leverage with your fingers.
Stop yanking the handle if it won't budge, because a stuck lock can break the handle or lever.

Try an old plastic card

Use an plastic card to reach the latch area at the edge of the door.
Don't use a real credit card or bank card, because the lock can bend or damage it.
Slide the card into the gap and push the locking mechanism until the door releases.
Stop if the card can't reach the latch without forcing the door frame.

Try string or garden cord

Work a string or garden cord into the groove around the door.
Use a flat blade screwdriver to push the cord into the groove if your fingers can't seat it.
Hold the cord at the top and bottom of the door.
Pull the cord toward the left-hand side to catch the locking lever and release the door.
Try the door handle while keeping tension on the cord.

Pry the door only as a last resort

Use a large screwdriver to wedge the door open only if the washer is being recycled or you accept damage.
Wear work gloves and safety glasses before prying, because the door, trim, or latch can crack.
Do not pry the door if you plan to repair the washer, because this can break the door, cabinet, or lock parts.
Arrange professional help if the release cord, card, and cord methods fail and you want to save the machine.

Check for handle or lock faults

Inspect the door handle and locking lever after the door opens.
Plan a separate handle or lever replacement if either part is cracked, loose, or no longer moves the latch.
Pull the green cord down and watch whether the locking mechanism moves up and down.
Suspect a door lock, interlock, wiring, or control fault if the mechanism doesn't release normally.
Do not use the washer if it still says the door is locked while the door is open.
Replace the washer or get a qualified appliance technician if there was a burning electrical sulfur smell or the repair cost isn't worthwhile.
