Use this guide to remove and clean the pump filter, also called the coin catcher, on a Hotpoint Aquarius washing machine. The pump filter catches small items such as coins, hair clips, elastic bands, hair, dirt, and mold before they reach the pump. Clean it if the washer drains poorly, leaves water in the drum, smells bad, or makes strange noises around the pump filter. This guide was written using a Hotpoint Aquarius washing machine; other Hotpoint models may have minor differences.

ШагиSteps
1
Prepare the washer
- Gather a bowl or tray, a large old towel, a brush, a sponge, hot, soapy water, and a flat-blade screwdriver or flat-blade knife.
- Switch the washing machine off at the power supply and unplug the power supply plug.
- Turn off the cold water inlet feed if you can.
2
Drain the drum and remove the lower panel
- If water is standing in the drum, remove as much as you can with a sponge.
- Place a large old towel across the floor in front of the washer.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or flat-blade knife to pry out the removable lower front panel.
3
Position the drain container
- If a lot of water remains in the machine, carefully tip the washer backward only far enough to fit a bowl or tray under the filter.
- Place the bowl or tray under the pump filter.
4
Loosen and drain the filter
- Turn the pump filter anti-clockwise slowly.
- Let the water drain into the bowl as the filter loosens.
- If the filter jams, tighten it, loosen it, and repeat the motion.
- Wiggle the washer gently to help trapped debris work loose.
- Keep working it back and forth until the filter releases.
5
Clear the impeller area
- Remove the pump filter and set it aside.
- Look inside the filter opening and remove loose debris, such as coins, hair clips, elastic bands, dirt, and hair.
- Reach into the back of the opening and turn the impeller or propeller with a finger.
- Remove anything that stops the impeller from turning freely.
- Tilt the washer forward a little to drain remaining water into the bowl if needed.
6
Clean the pump filter opening
- Use a brush to scrub inside the pump filter opening.
- Remove any remaining debris, mold, dirt, and hair from the pump cavity.
7
Clean the pump filter
- Take the pump filter to a sink.
- Wash it with hot, soapy water.
- Use a brush to scrub the filter until it is clean.
8
Reinstall the pump filter
- Line up the clean pump filter with the pump opening.
- Slide it in gently; don't force it.
- Turn the filter clockwise all the way until it locks in.
- Check for extra debris that may have fallen back down into the opening.
- Reinstall the filter and turn it clockwise until it locks again.
9
Run a leak and drain check
- Lower the washer back into position if it was tilted.
- Turn the cold water inlet feed back on.
- Start a washing program with the lower front panel still removed.
- Watch the filter area during the program and check for leaks.
- Confirm that the washer drains correctly by checking the drain outlet if you can do so safely.
10
Refit the panel and prevent blockages
- Clip the lower front panel back onto the washer after the filter stays dry and the washer drains correctly.
The pump filter is clean when it locks in place, stays dry during a wash program, and the washer drains normally. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
