Use this guide to remove, clean, and refit the dispenser drawer on a Russell Hobbs washing machine. The dispenser drawer, also called the detergent drawer, feeds detergent and fabric softener into the wash. Over time, washing powder, fabric conditioner residue, mold, and residue can build up and wash down into clothes. This guide was written using a Russell Hobbs RH1042 washing machine, but other models may have minor differences.

2
Locate the dispenser drawer
- Stand at the front of the washing machine.
- Find the dispenser drawer in the top-left corner of the front panel.
3
Release the drawer
- Pull the drawer straight out gently until it reaches the stop.
- Press down the blue release button inside the drawer.
- Keep pressing the button while pulling the drawer out of the machine.
4
Remove the softener level indicator
- Lift out the fabric softener level indicator if it is fitted in the drawer.
- Set the indicator aside so you can access the compartment for cleaning.
5
Clean the dispenser drawer
- Soak the drawer with hot, soapy water.
- Use a brush to scrub the drawer inside and out.
- Remove mold, detergent powder residue, fabric conditioner residue, residue, and sludge from all compartments.
- Scrub until the drawer is clean and residue no longer wipes off.
6
Clean the drawer cavity
- Wipe inside the dispenser drawer cavity with a wet cloth and hot, soapy water.
- Use the brush to scrub moldy or gunky corners if the cloth can't reach.
- Hold the brush firmly and keep it away from the holes inside the cavity.
7
Refit the dispenser drawer
- Reinstall the fabric softener level indicator if you removed it.
- Align the drawer with the grooves in the opening.
- Slide the drawer all the way in until it sits fully home.
8
Check the drum rubber
- Open the washing machine door.
- Spin the drum by hand and check that it turns freely and quietly.
- Inspect the drum rubber door seal for debris, dirt, residue, and blockages.
- Wipe dirty areas with the wet cloth and hot, soapy water.
- Use the brush on the rubber seal if residue is heavy.
9
Run a hot empty cycle
- Plug the washing machine back in.
- Run the hottest wash program available with no clothes in the drum.
- Select a 90 °C wash or Drum Clean option if the machine has one.
- Let the cycle finish to flush residue from the system.
The dispenser drawer, drawer cavity, and drum rubber should now be clean and ready for the next wash. Clean the toothbrush and cloth, and store them away from personal hygiene items. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
