A washing machine door can stay locked when the child lock is on, the door lock hasn't reset, or the door release mechanism is stuck. This guide walks you through safe ways to open the door, including control checks, a power reset, emergency release methods, and last-resort options. Stop and get professional help if the door won't release without force, the latch area starts to break, or the washer still contains water.
🧰 Tools
- Pallet Knife
- Needle Nose Pliers
- 2.5 mm Flathead Screwdriver
- Plastic Cards
- String
- 6-in-1 Screwdriver
ШагиSteps
1
Check the child lock
- Wait until the washing program has finished before trying to open the door.
- Check whether the child lock is still on.
- Turn off the child lock using the control method for the washer.
2
Reset the door lock
- Switch off the washing machine at the wall plug.
- Unplug the washing machine from the outlet.
- Leave the machine unplugged for a couple of minutes.
- Try the door handle again to see if the lock has released.
3
Find the emergency release cord
- Use a blunt tool to remove the front access panel.
- Look behind the panel for an emergency release cord.
4
Pull the emergency release cord
- Gently pull the emergency release cord downward.
- Keep gentle tension on the cord until you hear the door release.
- Use pliers only if you can't grip the cord by hand.
5
Use a Bosch style emergency release
- Look for a slot-style emergency release if the washer doesn't have a loose cord.
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the release slot.
- Pull the release downward with the screwdriver to unlock the door.
6
Try a credit card on a moving latch
- Push a credit card into the door gap at the door release mechanism.
- Work the card toward the door release lever and try to catch it.
- Skip this method if the door release is fixed and doesn't move in and out.
- Use the string method only if the catch moves in and out.
7
Use string on a moving catch
- Push string into the groove around the front of the washing machine door.
- Feed enough string into the groove to reach the door catch.
- Hold the string at the top and bottom of the door.
- Gently pull both ends to catch the door release catch and open the door.
8
Decide whether to force the door
- Contact an appliance repair technician if the door won't release or you suspect a fault inside the door release mechanism.
If the door opened, inspect the latch and door lock area before running another wash. If you had to force the door or the lock still feels unreliable, have the door release mechanism repaired before using the machine again. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
