Use this guide to open a stuck door on a Bosch washing machine without forcing it. The door lock, also called the door interlock or locking mechanism, keeps the door shut during a wash. A child lock, power cut, E35 door error, E18 drain problem, faulty handle, or failed locking mechanism can leave the door stuck. This guide was written with a Bosch VarioPerfect Series 4 machine, and many Siemens models use a similar layout, but other models may have small differences.
🧰 Tools
- 6-in-1 Screwdriver
- String
ШагиSteps
1
Check simple causes and safety
- Check whether the child lock is active, and turn it off if needed.
- Make sure the drum has stopped spinning and isn't full of water.
- If the machine shows E18 or holds water, turn off the power supply water feed and check the pump filter before opening the door.
2
Switch off the power
- Switch off the washing machine at the plug.
- Try the door handle after the power is off.
- Keep the machine switched off while using any manual release method.
3
Open the lower access flap
- Find the small flap at the lower right corner of the washing machine.
- Push the small divot on the flap, and pull the flap open.
4
Pull the emergency release cord
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the hole in the emergency release cord.
- Pull the cord downward with the screwdriver until the lock releases.
- Pull the door handle open after the release moves.
5
Address a drain error
- Leave the door shut if the drum still contains water.
- Turn off the power supply water feed before working around a water-filled machine.
- Check, clean, and refit the pump filter if the machine shows E18, because E18 points to a blocked pump filter.
- Try the power-off and emergency release methods again after the water issue is handled.
6
Try the seal release method
- Slide a piece of wire between the door seal and the door to reach the release mechanism.
- Use string in the same area if it reaches the latch more easily than wire.
- Stop if the latch won't move easily.
7
Avoid forcing the door
- Avoid prying the door open with a large flat-blade screwdriver unless you accept the risk of damage.
- Call a washing machine technician if the emergency release and seal release methods don't open the door.
- Repair or replace the handle or locking mechanism if the door keeps getting stuck after it opens.
With the door open, keep the machine switched off until the cause is found. Fix any E18 drain issue before running another wash, and inspect the handle or locking mechanism if the door keeps sticking. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
