If your Insignia washing machine won’t fill with hot water, won’t fill with cold water, slowly drips water into the tub when it’s off, or shows an E1 error code, the water inlet valves or their supply can be at fault. This guide walks through checking the water supply and hoses, cleaning the inlet valve screens, testing the valve coils with a multimeter, and replacing a faulty inlet valve.
🧰 Tools
- Phillips #2 Screwdriver
- Needle Nose Pliers
- Safety Glasses
- Bucket
- Digital Multimeter
- Shop Towels
⚙️ Parts
- hot water inlet valve
- cold water inlet valve
ШагиSteps
1
Prepare for service
- Put shop towels and a container under the hose connections to catch any leftover water.
- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from spray and debris when hoses are loosened.
2
Inspect the water supply and hoses
- Disconnect the hot and cold water supply hoses from the washer inlet ports.
- Aim each hose into a container and briefly open the wall valve to confirm the hose actually supplies water.
3
Check and clean the inlet valve screens
- Inspect the inlet valve screens in the washer’s hot and cold inlet ports for debris.
- Use needle nose pliers to pull each screen straight out so you can check the screen and the area behind it.
- Wash and clean clogged screens, then reinstall them to improve water flow and potentially solve the problem.
4
Remove the top cover
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the three screws securing the top cover.
- Remove the right screw, the left screw, and the middle screw located between the water valves.
- Roll the washer console top forward to access the water valve area.
5
Disconnect the valve wiring
- Remove the wire harness connectors from the water inlet valve solenoids.
6
Test the inlet valve coils for resistance
- Set a multimeter to resistance (ohms).
- If the meter isn’t auto-ranging, set it to a 200–2000 Ω range.
- Press the meter leads onto the two metal prongs of a solenoid coil and read the resistance.
- Expect roughly 1070 Ω on each solenoid pair, and replace the valve if a coil is off by about 10% or more.
7
Decide whether the valves are faulty
- Replace the inlet valves if the washer slowly leaks water into the tub because a valve is stuck open from debris.
- Replace the inlet valves if the resistance test shows a damaged coil.
8
Release the valve retaining plate
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from the metal arm on the front of the valves.
- Pivot the retainer up and away from the valves to free the valve assemblies.
9
Replace a faulty inlet valve
- Use needle nose pliers to pinch the hose clamp retainer and slide it farther back onto the hose.
- Pull the water valve out of the hose.
- Press the replacement valve into the hose, then release the clamp near the end of the barb.
10
Reinstall the valves and reassemble
- Reseat the valves into the plastic gaps that hold them in place.
- Reinstall the wire harness connectors onto the correct solenoids because they only fit one way when aligned properly.
- Lower the metal retainer bar onto the valves and maneuver it until it snaps into place.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to reinstall the two retainer plate screws and the three top cover screws.
11
Check for 120 VAC at the valves if filling still fails
- Set a multimeter to AC voltage if the water supply and valves check out but the washer still won’t fill.
- Pull the wire harnesses slightly off the valve terminals to expose metal, but don’t fully remove the connectors.
12
Check wiring and valve continuity from the control board
- Disconnect the wiring connectors, especially the one marked CN5.
- Use a multimeter in ohms mode to test CN5 pin 1 to pin 6, then pin 2 to pin 6, to check the hot and cold solenoids through the harness.
- If the meter shows OL, the wiring is likely broken between the board and the valves and needs to be inspected and replaced.
If the washer fills correctly again after hose, screen, or inlet-valve service, reconnect the supplies carefully and confirm both hot and cold fills work without seepage or drip-fill. If the supply and valves test good but the washer still will not command water, keep the diagnosis focused on harness and control-board faults rather than replacing more valve parts.
