If your Midea top-load washing machine won’t drain (sometimes showing an E2 error code), the most common causes are an incorrectly positioned drain hose, a blockage in the tub-to-pump or pump-to-drain path, a failed drain pump, or a wiring/control problem that prevents the pump from running. This guide walks through checking hose height, clearing blockages, draining the tub manually, accessing the drain pump from underneath, testing the pump, and checking the wiring to the control board. Midea-built top-load washers sold under other brand names may be similar, but clean-out locations, screw types, and wire colors can vary by model.

ШагиSteps
1
Prepare for a safe, wet repair
2
Check the drain hose height
- Check that the drain hose outlet is positioned about 100 cm (39 inches) above the floor.
- Set the hose height to about the same level as the rear of the washer so it drains properly.
- Avoid setting the hose too high or too low, because it can cause siphoning and prevent draining.
3
Look for a pump clean-out
- Check the bottom rear area for a clean-out cap that can be unscrewed to remove debris near the pump.
- Unscrew the clean-out and remove any blockage you find.
4
Drain the tub manually by siphoning
- Lower the drain hose to the floor or near floor level to siphon most of the water out of the tub.
- If water won’t siphon out with the hose at floor level, assume there’s an obstruction in the pump or drain path.
5
Tilt the washer to access the drain pump
- Tape the lid closed, or hold it securely so it can’t flip open while the washer is tilted.
- Locate the drain pump from underneath by finding the pump body with a large hose attached to it.
6
Remove the pump mounting screws
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the three pump mounting screws if your model uses Phillips screws.
- Use a 10 mm socket to remove the three pump mounting screws if your model uses 10 mm-head screws.
7
Disconnect hoses and clear blockages
- Use slip-jaw pliers to remove the tub hose from the pump.
- Check for obstructions inside the washer tub opening and inside the tub hose you removed.
- Check the hose path from the pump to the outlet drain hose for a blockage.
- Use a flashlight to look for debris if the tub wouldn’t drain when you lowered the drain hose earlier.
8
Access the drain pump wire in the wire bag
- Find the bagged wire cluster near a rear corner of the washer where the wiring routes to the PCB.
- Remove the back screws if needed to access the wire bag more easily.
- Trace the drain pump wire and separate it from the wire cluster because wire colors can vary by model.
- Remove any cable ties in the way, including any surface-mount cable tie holding the pump wiring.
- Unwrap any cotton wrap around the wire bundle slowly, and plan to tape it back up during reassembly.
9
Test the drain pump resistance
- Set a multimeter to ohms resistance mode.
- Press the multimeter leads into the drain pump wire harness terminals to measure the pump’s resistance.
- Replace the pump if the reading isn’t about 16 to 17 ohms, allowing roughly a 20% margin.
10
Inspect the pump impeller for damage
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the three or four screws securing the pump housing to the pump motor.
- Remove the pump housing from the motor to access the plastic impeller paddle inside.
- Move the impeller and confirm it has three or four firm segments that resist turning and then spring forward.
- Replace the pump if the impeller feels very loose or looks damaged because it may be stripped.
11
Reinstall the pump and secure the wiring
- Route the pump wiring back into the wire cluster the same way it was originally installed.
- Mount the wire bag back onto the side of the machine using its metal wire tie.
- Reattach the tub hose to the pump, and reinstall the three screws that secure the pump housing to the drum.
12
Test the pump harness and the control board
- Access the PCB from the back of the machine or with the machine laid on its front.
- Unplug the drain pump connection at the control board, labeled CN5.
- Test for continuity or ohms between pin three and pin six on the harness wires going to the pump.
- If you get continuity, suspect a bad control board that isn’t triggering the drain pump.
- If you don’t get a signal, suspect a break or fault in the wiring between the board and the pump.
If the washer drains normally again after you correct the hose height, clear the blockage, or replace the pump, restore the drain hose to the proper height and secure the wiring so the problem does not return. If the washer still will not drain after pump and harness checks, the remaining fault is likely in the control path or model-specific wiring rather than the basic drain hardware.
